Syllabus for Orientation to Special Education in the Nampa School District

Course Description: This course will introduce new special education teachers to special education procedures, policies, and philosophies within the Nampa School District. The course will review IDEA as it is implemented in Idaho and within the Nampa School District. The course will provide new special education teachers with the tools necessary to begin their careers as special education teachers supporting the learning of students. As a culminating project, teachers will produce a complete special education document from referral through completed IEP during this course.

Course Objectives:

§ Students will be able to list resources available within the district and state.

§ Students will demonstrate the ability to write a complete special education document from referral to eligibility including early childhood IEP’s and secondary transition plans.

§ Students will understand decision make processes including determining ESY, Special Transportation, assistive technology and change of placement, including pre-placement evaluation.

§ Students will become familiar with functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans

§ Students will become familiar with Common Core and what it means to Special Education

1. Orientation to the Nampa School District “Who are we?” - special education department, Supports within our district, programs within our district, our student population.

2. The ‘Process” part one. – The Nampa School District Compliance manual – Referral to Eligibility.

3. The “Process” part two – The Nampa School District Compliance manual – IEP to Written Notice and Exit

4. The “Process” part three – Early Childhood IEP’s and Transition IEP’s

5. Determining ESY, Special transportation, assistive technology, our paperwork, process, files, meeting notes, Medicaid

6. Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plans

7. Change of Placement and pre-placement evaluation,

8. Common Core – what does it mean to special education? Review
